Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything

User Experience Refresh

Problem Statement:

Over 10 years ago, noted cookbook author Mark Bittman released one of the first mobile cooking apps based on his “How to Cook Everything” cookbook. Since its release, more cooking apps with a contemporary look and feel have entered the market providing more robust features, and easier to use interfaces. In this current market, the Bittman app looks old and dated with content that is vague and confusing and difficult to navigate.

Project Goals:
  • Redesign the look and feel of the app to look more contemporary and modern.
  • Re-imagine the app to be more intuitive and easier to navigate through the recipes.
  • Organize the content to be easily accessible and more meaningful to the user.
  • Find a more effective way to integrate the recipes, variations, and cooking techniques.

Original App – Analysis
  1. It’s difficult to seek information on any ingredients without leaving the recipe.
  1. Recipe sections have their own section accessed by pressing the numbered buttons. This divides the recipe for no useful purpose and makes reviewing past steps while cooking more difficult.
  2. Lack of photos give the page a bland appearance.
  1. Timer is overly complicated and obscures the recipe.
  1. Recipe variations are vaguely written and would benifit from photos.
